Welcome to chapter 3, “La cultura y los viajes.” In chapter 1 you discussed your school, your schedule, and the community around your school. In chapter 2, you shared more about your family, friends, and other important people in your immediate community and learned about the important people in your classmates’ lives. In chapter 3, we move outside of our immediate contexts and discuss culture. You will begin by examining identifying what culture is, discussing your own culture, and sharing which elements of your culture feel the most salient in your daily life. From there, we will discuss the ways in which we share cultures with those around us, either at home or while traveling, and how different people work to preserve their cultures. You will discuss your own experiences with travel and share some of what you’ve learned about other cultures or your own culture.

    • 3.1: Module A - What is my culture?
We will begin chapter 3, “ La cultura y los viajes ,” by asking the question, “What is our culture?” In this module, you will identify key elements of culture and discuss which are most present in your own city and community. You will also discuss which of those are important to you culturally and which are not. You will learn more about your classmates and about what elements of culture are most present and important in their lives.
    • 3.2: Module B - Sharing Cultures
In this module you will learn about cultures in different places where Spanish is spoken, as well as some of the unique experiences travelers may have there. You will also read about and listen to ways that people share their culture with others and explore the connection between language and culture. You will learn about language preservation and discuss with classmates the importance of language in culture.
    • 3.3: Module C - Places and travels
In this module, you will learn more about Spanish-speaking cultures and countries around the world. You will share information about your own past travels and hopes or plans for future travels. You will identify important features of a place you choose to travel to, and you will hear from others about what they look for in new places.
    • 3.4: Module D - Comparing cultures
In this module, you will continue exploring different Spanish-speaking cultures and examining the culture where you live, especially in writing. You will begin comparing and contrasting cultures, and you will read about people who have migrated from one country to another and about the impact of culture on them. You will also learn more about the cultural elements of where you live that are important to your classmates.
    • 3.5: Reflection and Review
With this review, you will wrap up chapter 3. You will explore a few more elements of culture, including language and celebrations. You will demonstrate your ability to express your thoughts in writing, work with peers and your instructor to edit your writing, and continue building writing skills. You will also reflect on your language-learning experience so far and determine how you want to approach the next chapter.
