    What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

    Artificial intelligence is intelligence generated by machines using mathematical models to identify and encode patterns in data sets, which can then perform predictions on new situations which they haven't encountered before. A chatbot or bot is an AI program designed to help human users with simple tasks and communicate via voice or text commands in a way that simulates a human-to-human conversation. One specific chatbot is Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer or ChatGPT, released by Open AI in 2022. It can produce a body of unique text from a user's specific input based on existing content from the internet. AI can be a useful tool for assembling research information, but you will also need to verify and document any sources used by AI as well as write your paper in your own words.

    How Can AI Be Used in the Classroom?

    Appropriate uses of AI should be established in class policies set by your professor. If you aren't sure what it means in your class to use generative AI tools for specific purposes and/or assignments, be sure to ask your professor before you begin your paper. Tools such as GPT-4 And ChatGPT Detector by ZeroGPT, and AI Content Detector by Content Detector.AI can detect use of AI. Inappropriate use could fall under violations of the EVC plagiarism policy.

    Student Checklist for Ethical Use of AI

    Once you know your class policies, be sure to review all stages of your work before turning it in. Some questions you could ask include:

    • Did I follow the instructor’s guidance on exactly what and how generative AI tools can be used for this assignment? Ask clarifying questions as needed.
    • Did I make the effort to be certain that my writing style and voice are evident in my work?
    • If my professor has questions about my use of AI, am I able to respond to any questions that may arise? If the answer is “no,” what steps can I take to address those areas?
    • What reason(s) did I have for using AI to complete a particular passage or section? Was it used for idea generation or to create an outline, for example?
    • Did my use of AI follow the guidelines given for this particular assignment?
    • Did I cite my usage correctly according to instructor or institution guidelines?
    • Am I prepared to discuss my writing process, including 1)Where/when did I work on the assignment? 2)Who else read it and possibly provided feedback? 3)What changes did I make and why? 4)How did I conduct the necessary research?
    • Can I clearly outline and explain the writing choices I made, including 1)What sources did I include or choose not to? 2)Why did I take this position? 3)How and why did I select each example/evidence? 4)Are my personal ideas or experiences evident?
    • Can I provide documentary artifacts of my writing process, including handwritten or electronic notes, outlines, version drafts, or feedback from a peer or other trusted reviewer?
