    • 12.1: Regional configurations of historical territories
Contemporary art is made by artists who are living and working today. As a global art movement, it coincides with the rise of globalization that was triggered by the end of the Cold War in 1989 and the invention of the World Wide Web. Time sped up, distances collapsed, an international trade enabled by the "borderless world" ushered in decades of unprecedented economic growth, rapid social changes, and mass migration. Societies across Asia, especially in China, were radically transformed.
    • 12.2: Installation Art (2000 - Present)
Installation art is a relatively new genre for the millennium defined as large-scale constructions, usually mixed media, and installed for a specified period. The artwork usually fills the space, and viewers must walk through the exhibit, often becoming part of the installation.
    • 12.3: Contemporary Figurative (2000 - Present)
Figurative art based on people and stories has become a dominant part of the art world. Although figurative work had been created centuries, the contemporary styles are new, innovative, and non-traditional. Global boundaries are gone, and the standards for European-Western art are jettisoned.
    • 12.4: Architecture (2000 - Present)
Architecture is the art and process of designing and constructing buildings, both small and large. Architects accomplish practical and expressive requirements to provide both functional and artistic ends. Contemporary architecture is a compilation of many styles with no dominant hierarchy.
    • 12.5: Contemporary Sculpture (2000 - Present)
In the twentieth century, sculpture in Asia was limited for decades because of wars, government coups, and cultural revolutions. Wars forced people to flee their homes; monetary resources were allocated to survival, military equipment, and armies. In China, the century saw British invasions, two world wars with the Japanese invasion, communist wars, and the cultural revolution.
