Welcome to chapter 5, “Nuestro pasado.” In previous chapters you’ve shared stories and perspectives about your current life in and out of school. In this chapter, you will share more about your past experiences. You will begin by identifying important moments in your past and discussing the ways those events and experiences have influenced your current circumstances. You will also read and listen to stories about others whose past experiences shaped their present context. Linguistically, this shift in time frames will give you an opportunity to experiment with the language skills you have developed so far and to implement new skills related to storytelling.

    • 5.1: Module A - Personal timelines
Welcome to chapter 5, “Nuestro pasado.” In this module , you will begin identifying key events in your life and become more comfortable with speaking about past events. You will share milestone events in your own life and learn about some of the important moments in your classmates’ lives, such as birth, moving, graduating, meeting important friends or partners, adopting pets, making important purchases, learning important skills, gaining and losing family members, and more.
    • 5.2: Module B - Important moments
In this module, you will continue discussing the past but begin focusing more on moments that have helped change the trajectory of your life. You will discuss important opportunities you have had, people you have met who became important to you, and experiences that have shaped who you are today. You will learn more about the significant moments in the lives of your classmates, and you will continue building interpretive skills as you listen to and read about the past experiences of others.
    • 5.3: Module C - Long term goals
In this module you will learn about the long term goals of several different people and about the steps they took in the past to meet those goals. You will also discuss how their past motivations are impacting their current situations. You will discuss with classmates things that you have always wanted to do and identify ways to overcome the barriers that may have kept you from meeting your goals.
    • 5.4: Module D - The past impacting the present
In this module you will discuss the ongoing impact of the past on our present circumstances. You will learn about others’ experiences with issues related to race and social justice. You will share your own experiences with discrimination or times you have been a witness to discrimination against others. In writing, you will expand on the ways in which your past has influenced your present situation.
    • 5.5: Reflection and Review
With this review, you will wrap up chapter 5. What are the lessons we learn from our past? What helps us make meaning of past experiences? You will demonstrate your ability to express your thoughts in writing, work with peers and your instructor to edit your writing, and continue building writing skills. You will also reflect on your language-learning experience so far and determine how you want to approach the next chapter.
