(Remember that using the preterite tense limits us to narrating what happened. We cannot describe what things were like.) You can look back at the story about Mike and Ximena for some guidance. Be sure to conjugate the verbs in the yo form, as we want to practice narrating in first person.

Lengua 5.3: Present perfect tense
We have learned many verb tenses, and now it is time to learn one more. You may have noticed that the preterite tense is limited to narrating things that occurred. With these limitations, we have been unable to express many concepts. We have waited long enough! Th e present perfect tense is wh at we need in order to express experiences we have had in the past.
How is it formed?
The present perfect tense is formed by combining the present tense of the verb haber with the past participle of the main verb. We have seen haber meanin g “to exist” in the form hay . In the perfect tenses, though, haber is more closely translated a s “to have” (but not in the way that tener means “to have” ). Haber is very irregular in the present tense:
Haber
Yo he
Tú has
Ella, Él, Usted ha
Nosotras, Nosotros hemos
Ellas, Ellos, Ustedes han
Alternative forms
Vos has
Vosotros habéis
Past participles are formed by removing the -ar , -er , or -ir from the infinitive form of a verb and then adding -ado to the -ar verbs and -ido to the -er and -ir verbs.
hablar → hablado comer → comido vivir → vivido
Past participles do not change form according to the subject; they are not conjugations. For the present perfect tense, they must be used with the verb haber .
He hablado con el agente de viajes, pero me dijo que no puede ayudarme.
¿Ya has comido el sándwich que te preparé? ¿Te gustó?
Mi familia ha vivido en esa casa por cinco años.
There are a few common verbs with irregular past participles:
romper → roto hacer → hecho decir → dicho
poner → puesto escribir → escrito volver → vuelto
ver → visto morir → muerto abrir → abierto
But many common verbs, including ir , ser , querer and tener , which are so often irregular in other forms, follow the rules for past participles. Their past participles are ido , sido, querido and tenido , respectively.
How is it used?
The present perfect tense is generally used in the same way in Spanish as it is in English. One use is to express a past action without specifying exactly when it occurred.
He visitado quince estados de los EEUU. I have visited fifteen US states.
¿Alguna vez has visto un OVNI? [33] Have you ever seen a UFO?
¡Fiona me ha mentido otra vez! Fiona has lied to me again!
It can also express a condition or activity that began at some unspecified point and continues to the present moment:
Kel ha estado enferma por una semana. Kel has been sick for a week.
¿Por cuánto tiempo has vivido aquí? How long have you lived here?
Luisa siempre ha sido muy creativa. Luisa has always been very creative.
Either way, there will be some relevance to the present moment. Consider the difference:
Preterite: No comí el desayuno. I didn’t eat breakfast.
Present perfect: No he comido el desayuno. I haven’t eaten breakfast.
In many contexts, both verb forms work grammatically. The present perfect usually establishes a closer relationship to the present circumstances.
Note that we cannot place anything between the two parts of the ver b. “He nunca bailado” does not work; it needs to be “Nunca he bailado.” If the verb needs a pronoun, it must precede the conjugated verb (which is haber in this case).
Reflexive verb example: ¿Ya te has bañado? ¿Puedo usar el baño?
Indirect object example: ¡Mira! Mi abuela me ha mandado galletas de chocolate.
Direct object example: –¿Sabes dónde está mi mochila? –No, no la he visto.
Avoiding common errors
Note that in English, the past participle is often the same form as the past tense:
We danced yesterday. We have danced .
She won the award. She has won .
With the verb to eat , we can see that the past participle and the past tense are not the same. You would sat “I ate” but “I have eaten .” Awareness of this distinction can help us avoid a common error as English speakers: using a preterite form of the verb, such as “Tengo encontré” (I have I found) when you meant to say “He encontrado.” This error is significant enough that meaning is completely lost; your reader or conversation partner will have no idea what you were trying to express.
Also, in Spanish you must include the participle; the verb haber cannot be left on its own. This is in contrast to English:
–Who has seen that movie? –I have!
–¿Quién ha visto esa película? –¡Yo! (Or “¡Yo la he visto!” but never “¡Yo he!”)
Another common error is treating the past participle as if it were an adjective, and changing the gender and number to match the subject. This mistake is less likely to result in utter confusion, but it is also a more common mistake. It is common because many past participles do also exist as adjectives. For example, consider the verbs morir (to die) and aburrir (to bore). The past participles are muerto and aburrido . These words are also the adjectives dead and bored/boring .
She has died. Ella ha muerto . (past participle)
She is dead. Ella está muerta . (adjective)
We have bored our students. Hemos aburrido a nuestros estudiantes.
My students are bored. Mis estudiantes están aburridos .
That class is boring. Esa clase es aburrida .
We can avoid this error by remembering that when the participle follows the verb haber , it is part of a perfect tense and not an adjective; therefore, it does not change its form. When it follows the verb ser or estar , it will match the number and gender of the noun it describes.
Finally, note that there are some differences in usage based on geographic location. In Spain, for example, the present perfect tense is much more widely used. It is common to hear the present perfect in contexts where speakers from Latin America would use preterite tense.

- I can almost always correctly form past participles of familiar verbs, including some common irregular ones.
- I can recognize and understand present perfect verbs when I read or hear them.
- In writing, I can use present perfect verbs to express experiences that I have had.
Lengua 5.4: Verbs to illustrate the preterite tense concept
As we continue discussing experiences in the past, it is important to know that we will need both the preterite and the imperfect verb tenses in order to fully express ourselves in past tense. We will study the imperfect tense soon, but first we will explore a handful of verbs that stand out as examples of how the preterite tense works. In some texts, these verbs are presented as “Verbs that change meaning” in the preterite and imperfect. In reality, they do not change meaning; it is simply that their preterite and imperfect uses are different enough that it seems as if they were different verbs.
In general terms, the preterite expresses something that happened . It cannot merely describe what things were like. The imperfect tense, as we will see in a later Lengua section, describes what was going on, what used to occur, or what things were like.
In this Lengua section, we will look at the verbs saber , conocer , poder , querer , tener , and tener que in the preterite tense. This is an opportunity to improve our understanding of the preterite before we begin to use the imperfect.
Saber
In the present tense, saber expresses knowledge and ability:
Sé la respuesta.
Sé hablar alemán.
In the past tense, these would b e “I knew the answer” and “I knew how to speak German.” Neither one of those is an action; that kind of knowledge is ongoing. To express those ideas, we would need the imperfect tense (which we will learn in a later Lengua section). In the preterite, we are taking the concept of knowledge and applying it to something that happened. Thus saber in the preterit e means “to find out” or “to discover”; it is the action of knowledge.
Cuando leí las noticias, supe los resultados de la elección.
¿Cómo supiste que no hay clase mañana?
Conocer
Very similar to saber , the familiarity expressed by conocer in the present tense is not an action. The present tense senten ce “Conozco a Daniela muy bien” would be “I knew Daniela very well” in the past tense, and it would need the imperfect tense . For the preterite, then, what is the action that corresponds with familiarity? It is to meet , and so this is the implication of conocer when used in the preterite.
¿Dónde conociste a tu novia?
Saúl es un buen amigo. Lo conocí en la escuela secundaria.
Poder
In the present tense, poder expresses ability, which is not an action. For example , “Ella puede bailar muy bien.” In the past tense, this would be “She could dance very well.” An ability is not an action, and so again, we would use the imperfect tense. What does poder mean in the preterite, then? It is the ability plus a follow-through action: to manage to do something or to fail to do something.
Los perros corrieron muy rápido, pero no pudieron atrapar al conejo.
Este trimestre ha sido muy difícil, pero ayer por fin pude entregar mi trabajo a tiempo.
Querer
In the present tense, querer means “to want.” In the past tense , “I wanted” w ould require the imperfect, because it describes what things were like in the past. The preterite of querer expresses both the wanting and the follow-through action. The preterite affirmative of querer mea ns “to try” or “to decide” (th e wanting plus the action). The preterite negative of querer mea ns “to refuse” (t he action for not wanting).
Quise abrir la puerta, pero no pude.
Invité a María, pero ella no quiso venir.
Tener
In the preterite, tener rarely expresses possession. Possession is ongoing, and so it would require the imperfect. Instead, the preterite of tener expresses something that happened. We cannot use the pre terite for “I had a bicycle,” but we can use it for “I had an accident.”
Tuvimos muchos problemas con los caballos por toda la nieve en la montaña.

34. Una entrevista [36] This exercise is a practice interpretive assessment. Read the transcript and answer the questions below in English. Give responses that demonstrate your level of comprehension. Note that this is natural native-speaker conversation. Do not expect to understand all of it. You may not even understand most of it. Read the questions first, and then read the interview, looking for that specific information.
Entrevistador: ¿Cómo conociste a tu esposa?
Y ah pues
a pie.
Pues no, siempre yo creo he
sido feliz, yo siempre he sido... siento que siempre he sido feliz, pero más
o más así que me acuerdo yo, yo creo que cuando nací, me la pasé bien suave hasta lloré para decirte. Pero no, todos los días para mí son bonitos, no tengo, inclusive cuando murió mi papá y mi mamá yo sentía felicidad porque ya estaban con Dios.

35. Las experiencias Vamos a empezar a conversar sobre las experiencias que hemos tenido. Below are several questions asking if you have ever had a certain experience. First, use present perfect to answer whether you have or have not had the experience. Then if you have, use the preterite to tell a little about what happened. If you have not, write a couple of sentences to expand on your answer or write about an experience that someone else had. Use the models as you write your own responses.
