Welcome to Spanish class! In chapter 1, “ La clase de español ” , we will dive right in using Spanish to talk about our immediate context: Spanish class. You will be able to share a little about yourself and learn about your classmates and instructors in order to better know the people you’ll be working with. As we continue in the chapter, you’ll discuss with classmates the community around you and the different resources available to students. You will also share information about your life off campus and how you believe it compares to that of a typical student. Some grammatical skills you will work on to support these conversations include common verbs such as ser , estar , and haber . You will begin working with regular present tense verbs and forming questions, among other skills. You will also develop skills and vocabulary to help you navigate gaps in communication, accepting that at this level there will be many times when you won’t be able to express all that you hope to share.

    • 1.1: Module A - Introduction to La clase de español
Chapter 1’s theme is “ La clase de español,” giving us the opportunity to jump right into using Spanish for what’s most relevant to our immediate context. In this module, you will get to know your classmates, learn about the course, and talk about your own reasons for studying Spanish. You will come across lots of new words and learn how to indicate confusion and ask for clarification. You will gain experience and familiarity with the language-learning process.
    • 1.2: Module B - Our school community
In module B, you will continue to share more about yourself and learn more about your classmates. These introductory conversations will naturally turn to classes and hobbies. Also, since school is a shared context, you will talk a bit about your school itself, including what services there are, where they are, and how you and other students use them. Next, our context will expand to the city. You will talk about places in the city, sharing likes and dislikes.
    • 1.3: Module C - Classmates and life outside the classroom
In this module, you will learn more about your colleagues and begin discussing the “typical” student. You will also talk about how you and your classmates compare to this hypothetical student. These conversations will involve gathering and sharing information about daily habits, likes and dislikes, and life outside of school. Next, we will consider how the typical student at our school compares to college students in other parts of the country, as well as in other countries.
    • 1.4: Module D - The student experience
In this module, you will continue discussing college students in the US. You will develop your ability to convey information in a conversation, as well as comprehend information from your conversation partner. You will also work on expressing your thoughts in sentence form, and practice writing more fluidly.
    • 1.5: Reflection and Review
With this review, you will wrap up chapter 1. You will demonstrate your ability to express your thoughts in writing, work with peers and your instructor to edit your writing, and continue building writing skills. You will also reflect on your language-learning experience so far and determine how you want to approach the next chapter.
