However, according to Kellner and Durham (2006), this is an artificial division that reflects a lack of communication between sub-fields and the specialization of labor post-WWII. That is, typically, social scientific scholars and critical scholars typically do not communicate with each other and are instead concerned with establishing the legitimacy of their approaches. With that being said, the humanties-based approach to the media that critical/cultural studies often takes can be easily complemented with a more social scientific approach toward relations of production and economy. Thus, instead of having an artificial division, it is important to attend to what each approach contributes and how the can work together.
