As we continue to practice methods of prewriting or generating ideas for essays, classification gives us the rare and awesome opportunity to create categories and place whatever we deem fit in them. The more complicated the rules for being part of a certain group or category, the more interesting, in my humble opinion! For this activity, you will be tasked with creating a category and populating it, but this activity is designed to be collaborative, so please prepare to share!
Directions
- Create a category and then list three specific items that fit into that category.
- Once you've put three items in your list, trade it with a person around you.
- Either add an item to your classmate's list and justify why it fits in a sentence, or write a sentence-length reason you think an item your classmate has categorized does not fit.
- Repeat with another student's list until you have at least three edits to your original list.
