Béisbol: El deporte nacional de Cuba
- Los historiadores piensan que el béisbol llega a Cuba entre 1864 y 1866.
- Entre los años 1868 y 1869 los españoles prohíben el deporte por su asociación con el movimiento independentista.
- Antes del béisbol, los deportes más populares en Cuba son las corridas de toros, las peleas de gallos y el fútbol.
- Para el año 1868, se funda el Habana Base Ball Club.
- En 1871, Esteban Bellán es el primer latino en ingresar en las Grandes Ligas norteamericanas de béisbol con el Mutual Club de Nueva York.
- También es el primer cubano y latinoamericano en conectar tres jonrones en un encuentro.
- Comenzando con el encuentro entre los Clubs de Habana y Matanzas en Palmar de Junco el 27 de diciembre de 1874, el deporte comienza a ganar importancia en Cuba hasta el punto de que parece ¨imposible apartarlo de la vida del cubano. La semilla estaba sembrada, los inicios de lo que posteriormente sería uno de los países con mayor historia y tradición beisbolera en el mundo, solo había comenzado.¨ (The seed was sewn, the beginning of what would later be one of the countries with the most history and tradition of baseball, had only begun.)
