Béisbol: El deporte nacional de Cuba
- Los historiadores piensan que el béisbol llega a Cuba entre 1864 y 1866.
- Entre los años 1868 y 1869 los españoles prohíben el deporte por su asociación con el movimiento independentista.
- Antes del béisbol, los deportes más populares en Cuba son las corridas de toros, las peleas de gallos y el fútbol.
- Para el año 1868, se funda el Habana Base Ball Club.
- En 1871, Esteban Bellán es el primer latino en ingresar en las Grandes Ligas norteamericanas de béisbol con el Mutual Club de Nueva York.
- También es el primer cubano y latinoamericano en conectar tres jonrones en un encuentro.
- Comenzando con el encuentro entre los Clubs de Habana y Matanzas en Palmar de Junco el 27 de diciembre de 1874, el deporte comienza a ganar importancia en Cuba hasta el punto de que parece "imposible apartarlo de la vida del cubano. La semilla estaba sembrada, los inicios de lo que posteriormente sería uno de los países con mayor historia y tradición beisbolera en el mundo, solo había comenzado." (The seed was sewn, the beginning of what would later be one of the countries with the most history and tradition of baseball, had only begun.)
