4.8: "There" Construction

( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\)

“There” Construction Video

Instructor Video: There Construction

English is not a pro-drop language, in other words, you cannot have an English sentence in which subject is not available. This’s why, we need dummy subjects like ‘there’ and ‘it’ in English.

For examples:

  • There is a car.
  • There are ten students.

Unlike English though, Hindi is a pro-drop language hence subject can be dropped, or it is not needed in ‘there’ or ‘it’ sentences. In these sentences, the verb agrees with the object.

For Examples:

1. English In my town, there is a museum.
Hindi Word order My town in + (there) + a museum + is
Hindi मेरे शहर में (___) एक संग्रहालय है |
2. English In my room, there are ten books.
Hindi Word order My room in + (there) + ten books + are
Hindi मेरे कमरे में (___) दस किताबें हैं |
3. English There is a computer on my desk.
Hindi Word order My desk on + (there) + a computer + is
Hindi मेरी मेज़ पर (___) एक कंप्यूटर है |
