من أقوال التراث عَن السَّفر
In Arab and Islamic heritage, travel was not only about moving from one place to another, but also a way to learn, gain experience, and broaden one’s horizons. One of the most famous sayings about travel comes from Imam Al-Shafi‘i الإمام الشافعي, who summarized its benefits in these well-known verses:
يقول الإمامُ الشافعي
تَغَرَّبْ عن الأوطانِ في طَلَبِ العُلا
وسافِرْ ففِي الأسفارِ خَمسُ فَوائِدِ
تَفريجُ هَمٍّ، واكتِسابُ مَعيشَةٍ، وعِلمٌ، وآدابٌ، وصُحبَةُ ماجِدِ
الترجمة
“Leave your homeland in search of honor,
For in travel there are five benefits:
Relief from worries, earning a livelihood,
Gaining knowledge, learning manners,
And the company of noble people.”
These lines show how scholars in the past viewed travel as a path to knowledge, self-improvement, and growth, not just a form of entertainment.
