    • 1.1: Introduction to Modern and Contemporary Art History (1800-Present)
Art history studies culture and people’s development through time using multiple art disciplines. Visual arts are one of the oldest forms of communication between humans and the fundamental beliefs of their culture. The historical background of art history has been written from the canon of wealthy individuals from Western countries focusing on well-known art and artifacts in isolated environments. To become more culturally inclusive, the textbook is written to redefine art history.
    • 1.2: Evolution of Modern and Contemporary Art
The industrial revolution changed the world forever in the 19th century. The industrial age brought economic power to merchants and a growing middle class. The ability to cross oceans on machine-powered ships and trains to traverse countries expanded the interchange of economic goods and intellectual ideas.
    • 1.3: Art Materials and Methods
Art materials and methods are anything an artist uses to create art in any combination. Materials and methods also can be defined as the process of manufacturing or fabrication of a piece of art such as bronze need to be melted and poured into a mold to be a finished piece of art.
    • 1.4: What Are the Elements of Art and the Principles of Art?
The visual art terms separate into the elements and principles of art. The elements of art are color, form, line, shape, space, and texture. The principles of art are scale, proportion, unity, variety, rhythm, mass, shape, space, balance, volume, perspective, and depth.
