    Space in Two-Dimensional Design

    Discussion:

    Open Space

Open space in a two-dimensional image creates a feeling of openness. Traditionally, this space is represented in broad vistas such as a landscapes. With new concepts of space, such as worlds beyond earth, and super-sized man-made digital environments, images of open space are only limited by our imaginations!

    Enclosed Space

Enclosed visual spaces may create a sense of mystery, privacy, or intimacy.

    Packed Space

Packed spaces may feel energized by the sheer numbers of objects and forms. Packed spaces provide opportunities for visual movement adding to the energized design.

    Assignment:

    Part 1:

Using cutouts from magazines or other print media, create an open space design. Consider color and value placement to help create a feeling of openness.

    Part 2:

Using cutouts from magazines or other print media, create an enclosed space design. Consider color and value placement to help create a feeling of a contained, intimate space. What is enclosing the space should be a major consideration in the design.

    Part 3:

Using cutouts from magazines or other print media, create a packed space design. Consider color and value placement as well as carefully selected shapes to help create a feeling of movement and energy.
