Sculpting with Paper Clay
- Problem: Weak Joints or Attachments
- Solution: Use slip made from the same paper clay mixture to ensure compatibility and a stronger bond.
- Problem: Drying Cracks
- Solution: Slow down the drying process by covering the sculpture with plastic or a damp cloth to prevent rapid moisture loss.
Using Soft Armatures in Ceramic Sculpture
- Problem: Armature Collapses Under Weight
- Solution: Build in stages, allowing lower sections to stiffen before adding more clay. Use denser materials like foam for additional support.
- Problem: Difficulties Removing Armature
- Solution: Use materials like biodegradable paper or plastic wrap that can be dissolved or easily removed once the clay stiffens.
Incorporating Hard Armatures
- Problem: Armature Causes Cracking
- Solution: Ensure a consistent clay thickness around the armature and allow for shrinkage during drying and firing.
- Problem: Armature Becomes Exposed After Firing
- Solution: Account for the clay body’s shrinkage rate during design and firing stages to prevent gaps.
Tar Paper Form Templates
- Problem: Templates Warp During Construction
- Solution: Use thicker tar paper or reinforce with additional layers to maintain shape and stability.
- Problem: Removing Tar Paper Leaves Residue
- Solution: Wait until the clay is leather-hard before removing the template, and clean any residue with a damp sponge.
