In 771, Charlemagne became king of the Franks, a Germanic tribe in present-day Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and western Germany. Charlemagne expanded the reform program of the church, including strengthening the church's power structure, advancing the skill and moral quality of the clergy, standardizing liturgical practices, improving on the basic tenets of the faith and morality, and rooting out paganism. Without Charlemagne, it is likely Christianity would not have survived and flourished like it did during the Early Medieval period.
The Carolingian Empire (800–888) was a large Frankish-dominated empire in western and central Europe during the Early Middle Ages. It was ruled by the Carolingian dynasty, which had ruled as kings of the Franks since 751 and as kings of the Lombards in Italy from 774.
The greatest Carolingian monarch was Charlemagne, Pepin's son. Charlemagne was crowned Emperor by Pope Leo III at Rome in 800. His empire, ostensibly a continuation of the Western Roman Empire, is referred to historiographically as the Carolingian Empire.
During this time, exquisite metalworking is present in the northern regions where the Danes dominate. There are also the earliest western precursors of printing houses established by monks creating illuminated textbooks in remote monasteries. Europe is often unstable at this time due to the frequent Viking and barbarian raids on the small towns across Europe.
