A good example is the difference between Roman Republican versus Roman Imperial portraiture. The Republican portrait honors the legacy and familial ties of the individual, whereas Imperial portraiture is used for propaganda and to promote the power of the position. We also see one of the most expansive empires of the ancient world with huge building programs and the first paved road, the Appian Way, in the west. Rome, particularly in the first century, is an empire we can often relate to. Much is written and documented allowing us a window into the lives of the Imperial rulers, Senate, and the commoners. Their way of life, personalities, loves, passions, struggles, and triumphs are all there in writing. No other ancient civilization gives us this much to absorb and assimilate. The Romans achieved great building feats using a concrete formula that sets underwater, constructing aqueducts that transport water from mountains across large valleys, and building the largest dome, also using concrete, in the west at the Pantheon. We see the rise of great leaders as well as the rule of psychotic madmen and it's all reflected in the surviving sculpture. An amazing period in history.
