Studying the Mediterranean region known as the Aegean, we see societies built around the sea. The Cyclades, Crete, and other local islands make up this region south of Greece. The Minoans, located on the island of Crete, developed an advanced civilization with running water, flush toilets, vibrant frescoes, monumental palaces, and a stable, maritime-based society. The undeciphered writing system, Linear A, was also developed by the Minoans. The civilization dates back to 3,000 BCE with the height of development dated to around 1500 BCE. The volcanic eruption of Thera, likely occuring between 1500-1600, along with subsequent eruptions and earthquakes, led to the collapse of this civilization. The Mycenaeans eventually took advantage of their weakened state and took control of the region.
