In his book The Backstage Guide to Stage Management, Thomas A. Kelly writes,

"In the simplest sense, stage managers create an environment within which highly volatile people can function freely, devoid of petty distractions and stumbling blocks - other than those of their own creation. The stage manager must execute the creative vision of each production, supporting and assisting the directors, designers, writers, and performers in the achievement of their artistic goals. The stage manager's creative energies should be focused on finding as many ways as possible to make the theatrical process simple and enjoyable..."

So we must understand that the stage manager has many different roles and responsibilities in the world of theatre. She needs to be an advocate, leader, and constant problem solver for her cast, crew and creative team.

The most important thing to know about stage management is that the director and stage manager are the ultimate team. They must both know about the workings of the production and no secrets should be kept from one another. It is only together that they are whole; apart they have less leadership and respect.

    Note

The Actors and Stage Management Union, "Actors Equity", provides a guide to Stage Managers on how to conduct rehearsals and manage actors' relationship with the entire production process.
