We are now going to continue and learn verbs that have patterns similar to the verb querer in the previous chapter. Like querer, you will see that conjugating these verbs also follow a predicatable pattern once you learn the patter. Don’t be daunted by learning these new irregularities– ¡Si quieres, puedes! (If you want, you can!)
These verbs have a secondary change during conjugation and are known as stem-vowel change verbs. This stem-vowel change is what happened with the -er verb querer. For example, Ella quiere un helado (She wants an ice cream). Incidentally, verbs with a stem-vowel change are sometimes called “verbos de bota” because in the conjugation chart, the stem-vowel change fits into a boot shape. All the conjugated verb forms change vowels except with the subjects nosotros and vosotros.
