Materials
- One 14 x 17 inch Bristol board sheet
- Tape your sheet to your board, ¼ inch clean, even margins!
- Pencil for sketchbook
- Non-photo blue pencil
- Painting supplies
- Value scanner
Guidelines
- Use a repeated shape in a variety of sizes to create a composition derived from one of three choices:
- A shape used by a professional artist.
- A unique symbol that symbolizes your self – shape only, not a letter.
- A shape derived from an object found outdoors.
- Sketchbook:
- Draw three ideas for your shape using pencil.
- Draw 2 preliminary compositions after choosing your shape (small thumbnails).
- Practice a variety of approaches to painting line for the project – try different colors.
- Paint nine color swatches under the shape drawings that you will use in your shape project.
- Colors:
- Primary Triad (cadmium red, cadmium yellow, and ultramarine blue)
- White to lighten
- Black to darken
- Experimental color mixtures – use a wide variety of colors.
- Values present: 2, 4 6, 8. - use your value scanner to determine value of color
Composition Must Contain
- The assigned value range for the composition.
- Shapes may vary in the way they are drawn, so long as they echo the primary shape choice.
- Interesting compositions, variety in shape placements and sizes.
- Variety in shape directions.
- Variety in value – do not repeat one type of value too many times.
- Exaggerated differences in shape sizes.
- Overlapping shapes.
- Effective color interactions.
- Shapes with line.
- Shapes without line.
- Clean, even, ¼ inch margins
