Taking the time away from tech communication and media is important in observation.
There are countless examples of how such field notes have advanced the natural sciences, environmental humanities, and artistic endeavors, but Jonathan and Roseann Hanson's Exploring site offers great reasoning with historical references. Additionally, John Muir Laws has great resources on the basics of wildlife drawing.

- What species do you see? You don’t need to be able to identify them all. Describe them as best you can.
- In writing, describe as you observe, considering all of your senses. You don’t have to have full sentences for this field activity. Are birds singing? Do you hear a woodpecker in the distance? Do you smell pines, dirt, exhaust from passing traffic? Do you feel the humidity on your skin? Are you sitting on moss?
- Draw and/or photograph something that you are observing. This could be the entire landscape, your bare feet in the mud, or a bee. Choose what you find significant.
- Reflect: what was your takeaway from this experience? What would you like to share with others? What did you learn, and what questions came up during the observation?
