- Understand the complexities of conceptual and real land and species on American identity
- Analyze Aldo Leopold's land ethic
- Research and evaluate local, regional, and/or national land use
How we relate to land involves all of the topics we have covered thus far. Our perception of land as object for use of subject to preserve changes our interaction with it. How we divert and dam rivers for agricultural or other uses, how we pollute or preserve waterways, and how we extract oil and gas resources are a part of this and demonstrate what we prioritize. Is the land around us for our use primarily--agriculture and oil and gas extraction--or is it valuable as is? These questions get at what Aldo Leopold called “land ethic” as he came to understand how we can relate to land as part of our community and learn from the spaces we inhabit.
Analyzing the history of the United States' relationship to land, as an example, offers meaningful insights into how perceptions have material effects on land and species. We were all taught about manifest destiny, the idea of dominion over land and the species inhabiting that land (though species were often left out of the conversation). Manifest destiny is the notion of a free expanse of land that drew European colonists to the portion of North America that would become the United States. An understanding of land and species (along with water and oil, of course) impacts how we relate to the land. As Jon Mooallem writes in Wild Ones, "the story of American wildlife would become a story of an infinitely receding Eden" (7).
