As Leopold writes in the "Land Ethic" section of Sand County Almanac, "The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals; or collectively: the land" (204). But the notion of an Eden receding is tied to particular worldviews, and those worldviews influence human relationship to land, as discussed in the first chapter. The land ethic concept was not completely new but offered one way for many naturalists at the time, and still today, to understand complex issues of land and ecosystem subjectivities.
