El llorón y las flores de la izquierda del sepulcro de DOÑA INÉS se cambian en una apariencia,1 dejando ver dentro de ella, y en medio de resplandores, la SOMBRA de doña Inés.
SOMBRA
No; mi espíritu, don Juan,
te aguardó en mi sepultura.
DON JUAN
(De rodillas.)
¡Doña Inés! ¡Sombra querida,
alma de mi corazón,
no me quites la razón
si me has de dejar la vida!
Si eres imagen fingida,2
solo hija de mi locura,
no aumentes mi desventura
burlando mi loco afán.
SOMBRA
Yo soy doña Inés, don Juan,
que te oyó en su sepultura.
DON JUAN
¿Conque vives?
SOMBRA
Para ti;
mas tengo mi purgatorio
en ese mármol mortuorio
que labraron3 para mí.
Yo a Dios mi alma ofrecí
en precio de tu alma impura;
y Dios, al ver la ternura4
con que te amaba mi afán,
me dijo: “Espera a don Juan
en tu misma sepultura.
Y pues quieres ser tan fiel
a un amor de Satanás,
con don Juan te salvarás,
o te perderás con él.
Por él vela; mas si cruel
te desprecia tu ternura,
y en su torpeza y locura
sigue con bárbaro afán,
llévese tu alma don Juan
de tu misma sepultura”.
DON JUAN
(Fascinado.)
¡Yo estoy soñando quizás
con las sombras de un Edén!
SOMBRA
No; y ve que si piensas bien,
a tu lado me tendrás;
mas si obras mal, causarás
nuestra eterna desventura.
Y medita con cordura5
que es esta noche, don Juan,
el espacio que nos dan
para buscar sepultura.
Adiós, pues; y en la ardua6 lucha
en que va a entrar tu existencia,
de tu dormida conciencia
la voz que va a alzarse7 escucha,
porque es de importancia mucha
meditar con sumo tiento
la elección de aquel momento
que, sin poder evadirnos,
al mal o al bien ha de abrirnos
la losa8 del monumento.
(Se cierra la apariencia; desaparece DOÑA INÉS, y todo queda como al principio del acto, menos la estatua de DOÑA INÉS, que no vuelvea su lugar. DON JUAN queda atónito.9)
1 Aparato escénico de efecto especial similar al cyclorama teatral, en este caso hecho de una tela fina y transluciente (scrim) estirada en un marco o por cables e iluminada desde atrás para perfilar la sombra de Inés sin que le veamos claramente.
