In this module, you will continue sharing information about your routines and daily habits and explore how those actions reflect your values or beliefs. You will learn and share information about foods and drinks and discuss how what we eat, the ways we eat, who we eat with, and when we eat impact our daily lives. You will also look at the routines of several people and discuss how the way they prioritize their time may provide evidence of their values and perspectives. Finally, you will discuss how your own prioritization and daily customs do or do not reflect the things that are most important to you.

Lengua 4.5: Irregular preterite 2
In Lengua 3.6, we learned the irregular preterite conjugations of several of the most common verbs: ser, ir, hacer, decir, and tener . In this section, we will add more verbs to that list:
ver to see dar to give saber to know poner to put
venir to come estar to be traer to bring querer to want
poder to be able andar to walk, go, or wander.
While not all irregular preterite verbs follow the same patterns, these all have similar endings and groupings that will make them easier to remember. Here are the conjugations of these verbs in the preterite:
U-stem
Saber: supe, supiste, supo, supimos, supieron
Poner: puse, pusiste, puso, pusimos, pusieron
Estar: estuve, estuviste, estuvo, estuvimos, estuvieron
Poder: pude, pudiste, pudo, pudimos, pudieron
Andar: anduve, anduviste, anduvo, anduvimos, anduvieron
I-stem
Venir: vine, viniste, vino, vinimos, vinieron
Querer: quise, quisiste, quiso, quisimos, quisieron
J-stem
Traer: traje, trajiste, trajo, trajimos, trajeron
Ver and dar
Ver: vi, viste, vio, vimos, vieron
Dar: di, diste, dio, dimos, dieron
Note that none of the above verbs have accent marks in their preterite forms. If you would like to review the preterite forms of ser, ir, hacer, decir, and tener , you can access Lengua 3.6.
As a reminder, here are some common phrases to use with the preterite tense:
ayer yesterday
anoche last night
esta mañana this morning
en marzo in March
el mes pasado last month
la semana pasada last week
el lunes on Monday
hace dos días two days ago
el cuatro de enero on January fourth
ayer por la mañana yesterday morning
These phrases are helpful because they limit the time frame that is being referred to. In Lengua 5.5, we will look at the imperfect tense, which is used to describe the way things were in the past. With the preterite tense, in contrast, we are talking about what happened. For example, we cannot use the preterite of caminar for saying that we “used to walk” home from school every day, but we can use it for saying we “walked” to class yesterday.
One additional irregularity in the preterite is found in verbs like leer and incluir . These verbs undergo a spelling change:
Leer: leí, leíste, leyó, leímos, leyeron
Incluir: incluí, incluíste, incluyó, incluímos, incluyeron

Learning objectives check, Lengua 4.5: Irregular preterite 2
- While reading and listening, I can recognize and understand many verbs that are irregular in the preterite.
- I can sometimes correctly use a few of the most common irregular preterite verbs, such as dar and ver .
- With access to notes or reference pages, I can accurately conjugate almost all irregular preterite verbs I have learned about.
Lengua 4.6: Expressions with the infinitive 2
In Lengua 2.8, we explored some common expressions with infinitives, such as the following:
Tenemos que hacer algo para proteger los recursos naturales.
Quiero viajar por todo el mundo, pero no sé cómo ahorrar suficiente dinero.
El gobierno va a establecer reglas nuevas contra el uso de plásticos.
There are many other uses for infinitives. Rather than trying to memorize the specific examples, use these categories as tools for adding variety to your writing and speaking.
Expressions with infinitives
There are many verbs that are commonly used with infinitives. Remember that when two verbs are together, it will be most common to see the first verb conjugated and the second unconjugated. Here are some of those common verbs with examples:
Poder + infinitivo ¿Podrías ayudarme?
Quisiera + infinitivo Quisiera alcanzar una meta [52] cada semana.
Me gustaría + infinitivo Me gustaría visitar el jardín de rosas este fin de semana.
Hay que + infinitivo Hay que votar. Si la gente no vota, el presidente no va a
representar a los ciudadanos.
Acabar de + infinitivo Oregón acaba de aprobar una ley ambientalista.
You can review more of these expressions in Lengua 2.8.
Infinitives after prepositions
Prepositions are words that modify sentences by adding information about direction, location, and time. Some common Spanish prepositions include the following:
sin without
por for, by, because of, through, around
para for, by, in order to
hasta until
Prepositions can also be part of other clauses, such as the preposition de in the adverbial clauses antes de (before) and después de (after).
When a verb follows a preposition, it will be in the infinitive form. This can often be translated as an -ing word in English. Here are some examples of infinitive verbs being used this way:
Nunca voy al mercado sin traer una bolsa de compras.
(without bringing)
Nuestro modo de aprender cambia con la edad.
(of learning)
Hay planes para desarrollar el sistema de parques.
(for developing)
Me gustaría hablar con Isabel antes de salir .
(before leaving)
Después de viajar a Guatemala, decidí estudiar el arte indígena.
(after traveling)
Estudió hasta memorizar todos los nuevos verbos.
(until memorizing)
Infinitives as nouns
When used as nouns, infinitives are almost always considered masculine and singular. Many times, these will be translated as nouns ending in -ing in English. Here are some examples of infinitives being used as nouns:
Me interesa explorar las ruinas durante mis vacaciones.
Reciclar es importante.
Representar a todos debe ser la meta de los políticos.
Desarrollar nuestras habilidades artísticas requiere mucho trabajo.
Tomar suficiente agua y caminar todos los días son buenos hábitos de salud.
A very common error for students is to use the present participle, thinking that it will translate as the -ing word they’re hoping for. A student might say, “ Hablando español es divertido . ” This is incorrect. It should be “ Hablar español es divertido . ”
50. Preposiciones Fill in the blanks with the prepositions or prepositional phrases in parentheses in each sentence.
- ____________ (because of) estar enferma, no pude asistir a la conferencia.
51. Elegir Selecciona el verbo más lógico para completar cada frase.
