¡Empezamos el capítulo 2! Chapter 2’s theme is “ Las personas y las perspectivas ,” giving us an opportunity to learn more about ourselves, our classmates, and important people in our lives. In this module, you will learn more about your classmates and have conversations about how our identities are impacted by the context we are in. You will come across lots of new words and grammar that will help you be able to express yourself more fully. You will read and hear about the identities of others and use your developing language skills to identify important information despite gaps in knowledge. At the end of the module, you will explore the first two Lengua sections of chapter 2, explicitly studying some features of the language.
1. La lectura Read the introductions below. As you read, notice all of the cognates. Remember that you should not expect to understand fully; there are likely many words that are new to you. However, you should find that you are able to grasp the main idea as well as several details.
Alexis
Me encanta cantar [14] y escribo mis propias canciones. También toco la guitarra y el mandolín, aunque no muy bien, y participo en un club de arte dramático. Quiero aprender a pintar. Durante el día, soy enfermero en un hospital. Me gusta el trabajo, pero no me satisface; ¡necesito crear!

7. Perspectivas Paloma describes herself differently depending on whether her role is professor or parent. See the chart below showing how she might use different adjectives to describe herself in different contexts: en el trabajo, en casa, and con amigos . Using this chart as a model, create your own chart. Select three different contexts, and choose adjectives that fit you in those contexts. You can find adjectives in previous exercises, as well as in the vocabulary list above. Remember to make the adjectives’ gender match your own. To avoid assigning a gender to yourself, you can write “Soy una persona…” and then use feminine adjectives (to match the word persona ).

Lengua 2.1: Ser with descriptive adjectives
In Lengua 1.2, we looked at using the verb ser in the context of identification and expressing origin. For example,
Soy profesora.
PSU es una universidad grande.
¿De dónde eres ?
Soy de Denver.
We also described classes, students, and professors using the verb ser . For example:
Mi clase de arte es difícil.
Mis profesores son inteligentes.
Soy responsable.
In these last three examples, the words difícil , inteligente and responsable are adjectives. When we use the verb ser with an adjective, we are expressing an identifying characteristic or trait. Later, we will look at some differences between ser and estar . You may remember that both of these verbs translate as “ to be .” One difference that is important at this step is the fact that ser expresses part of identity, whereas estar expresses a condition or state. In some sentences, both verbs work grammatically, but the meaning changes:
Mi mamá es una persona nerviosa. My mom is a nervous person.
Mi mamá está nerviosa. My mom is feeling nervous.
For Lengua 2.1, we will focus on using the verb ser with adjectives, expressing identifying characteristics. [41]
Ser (to be)
Yo soy

Nosotras, Nosotros somos
Ellas, Ellos, Ustedes son

* While most adjectives tend to follow the noun in Spanish, these are some common ones that come before the noun.
** Cada comes before the noun, and also does not change form to match the number and gender of the noun.
Adjectives in Spanish will match the number and gender of the noun they describe. When describing something plural and feminine, for example, the adjective itself will be in a plural feminine form. Follow these steps to make words feminine:
If the word ends in an -o , change the -o to an -a .
If the word ends in -dor , add -a (to make the ending -dora )
If the word ends in -l, -n , -e , or -ista , it likely does not have a separate feminine form.
And to make words plural:
If the word ends in a vowel, add -s .
If the word ends in a consonant, add -es .
Ejemplos:
13. Las formas Write the correct form of the adjective, matching the gender and number of the subject for each sentence.

Learning objectives check, Lengua 2.1: Ser with descriptive adjectives
- I can conjugate the verb ser in the present tense for all subjects.
- I can give a few details about someone’s personality.
- I can express some defining characteristics of both people and things.
- I understand how and when to change an adjective’s gender and number.
Lengua 2.2: Stem-changing verbs 1
In Lengua 1.5, we looked at how to conjugate regular -ar , -er , and -ir verbs in Spanish. If you are not feeling comfortable with verb endings quite yet, you may want to review that section before moving on to this one.
Here, we will explore stem-changing verbs . When conjugated, these verbs have the same endings you have already learned, corresponding to the subject, and depending on whether they end in -ar , -er , or -ir . However, there is an additional step of changing the stem.
For example, the verb querer (to want) is an “e to ie” stem-changing verb. As we go through the conjugation steps, we add a stem change. The first step in verb conjugation is to remove the -ar , -er , or -ir ending from the infinitive (unconjugated) form. That leaves us with the stem . For querer , then, the stem is quer . Since it is an (e:ie) stem-changing verb, we need to change the stem to quier for all subjects except nosotros/as. Then we can add the endings we already know - in this case for an -er verb.
Querer (to want [e:ie])
Yo qu ie r o
Tú qu ie r es
Ella, Él, Usted qu ie r e
Nosotras, Nosotros quer emos
Ellas, Ellos, Ustedes qu ie r en
Alternative forms
Vos quer és
Vosotros quer éis
Querer is one of the most common stem-changing verbs. Most stem-changing verbs fall into just a few categories: (e:ie), (o:ue), or (e:i). The list below contains the most common stem-changing verbs along with information about what the stem change is.
querer (e:ie) poder (o:ue) pedir (e:i)
pensar (e:ie) encontrar (o:ue)
sentir (e:ie) contar (o:ue) jugar (u:ue)
entender (e:ie) volver (o:ue)
perder (e:ie) recordar (o:ue)
empezar (e:ie) dormir (o:ue)
Let’s follow the steps to conjugate the verb recordar (to remember). First, remove the -ar . The stem is record . Change it to recuerd for all subjects except nosotros/as. Now, add the subject-appropriate endings for an -ar verb:
Yo rec ue rd o
Tú rec ue rd as
Ella, Él, Usted rec ue rd a
Nosotras, Nosotros record amos
Ellas, Ellos, Ustedes rec ue rd an
There are some common verbs that follow the stem-changing pattern but also have an irregular first person singular ( yo ) form. One that you will recognize is the verb tener . Tener follows the stem-changing pattern as an (e:ie) verb, but the yo form is also irregular:
Yo tengo
Tú t ie n es
Ella, Él, Usted t ie n e
Nosotras, Nosotros ten emos
Ellas, Ellos, Ustedes t ie n en
Here are more verbs like that:
decir (digo [e:i])
seguir (sigo [e:i])
venir (vengo [e:ie])
mantener* (mantengo [e:ie])
obtener* (obtengo [e:ie])
*Note that once we know how a stem needs to change, we can apply that knowledge to all verbs that share the same stem.
15. La conjugación Fill in the chart below with the correct forms of the verbs. Remember that there are differences in conjugation rules for - ar , - er , and - ir verbs.

17. La familia y la identidad: Una entrevista Read the interview below, and answer the questions that follow. Remember that you should not expect to understand every word; focus on using the context in order to get the specific information that you need.
padre? ¿Es difícil hablar de la familia?
Marcos : Ah, ¿si es una situación desagradable? No, no pasa nada. ¡Simplemente tengo
muchos “primos” y “tíos”! Es común; no estoy solo en esta experiencia.
Luisa : Bueno, ¿cómo influyen en tu identidad tus “primos” y “tíos”?
Marcos : ¡Es una buena pregunta!
- ¿Con quién vive Marcos? __________________________
- ¿Quiénes son los “tíos” y “primos” de Marcos? Why are those words in quotation marks? ______________________________________________________________________
- ¿Marcos tiene familia biológica? ¿Quién(es) son? ______________________________
- ¿Por qué pregunta Luisa si es difícil para Marcos hablar de la familia? ______________
______________________________________________________________________
- How does Marcos feel about talking about family? ______________________________
______________________________________________________________________
- According to Marcos, what is family? ________________________________________

18. La familia Families do not fit into the molds that appear on television, in movies, in greeting cards, or even in Spanish textbooks! Below is the beginning of a vocabulary list as well as a short paragraph describing someone’s family. Add to the list, looking up the words and terms that you need in order to describe your own family. Then write a paragraph describing several family members.
