5.15: On traduit #OnlineTranslator

( \newcommand{\kernel}{\mathrm{null}\,}\)

[If you have not completed the activity “On s’éclate en musique”, go to it and complete: 1. On lit and 2. On papote.]

Even though you are at the beginner’s level, you should be able to grasp the general meaning of the song, however, the subtleties will be much harder to decipher.

As you have observed in previous activities, online translators can be useful for translating simple, straightforward language but can also produce unwanted errors. Below we will observe the English translation of the song lyrics which was obtained via an online translator.

** Potential ADAPT/H5P problem

Step 1. Read the text in French while you listen to the song : Céphaz - On a mangé le soleil (Clip Officiel)

1

I bought myself a dog, it keeps me warm in winter

J’ me suis acheté un chien, ça me tient chaud l'hiver

2

I bought myself a jacket, like last year

J'me suis acheté une veste, comme l'année dernière

3

I finished my plate, I'm not alone on Earth

4

And I have a phone that shines

5

We ate the sun

On a mangé le Soleil

6

We ate the stars

On a mangé les étoiles

7

We ate the sky

On a mangé le ciel

8

And we still have the slab, so we're going to eat the Moon

9

Quarter after quarter, because after all we can feed on hope

10

feed on hope

Se nourrir d'espoir

11

I bought myself a dog, like last year

12

My jacket is going out of fashion, I leave it to Abbé Pierre

13

I ate my plate, I put the cover back

14

I tasted the future, it tastes bitter

J'ai goûté au futur, il a un goût amer

15

We ate the sun

On a mangé le Soleil

16

We ate the stars

On a mangé les étoiles

17

We ate the sky

On a mangé le ciel

18

And we still have the slab, so we're going to eat the Moon

19

Quarter after quarter, because after all we can feed on hope

20

feed on hope

Se nourrir d'espoir

21

I crunched life, swallowed the pips

22

I devoured the boredom but I'm still hungry

J'ai dévoré l'ennui mais j'ai encore faim

23

I licked the sidewalks, hunger until the end

24

I wanted to quit but I ate my hands

25

We ate the sun

On a mangé le Soleil

26

We ate the stars

On a mangé les étoiles

27

We ate the sky

On a mangé le ciel

28

And we still have the slab, so we're going to eat the Moon

29

Quarter after quarter, because after all we can feed on hope

30

La la-la lala, la la-la la

La la-la lala, la la-la la..

La la-la lala, la la-la la

La la-la lala, la la-la la..

31

We ate the sun

On a mangé le Soleil

32

We ate the stars

On a mangé les étoiles

33

We ate the sky

On a mangé le ciel

34

And we still have the slab, so we're going to eat the Moon

35

Quarter after quarter, because after all we can feed on hope

36

feed on hope

Se nourrir d'espoir

Step 2. Read the English translation. Do you notice anything that does not sound right in English, odd sentences, phrasing, etc. ? Underline it. Share with your class and make a list.

Step 3. Once the list is on the board, you will go over it with your teacher who will explain what it means in French.

Step 4. Now that you know what the text means in French, rewrite it so it makes sense in your variety of English. Share your version with the class and discuss your choices.
