    Summary

In this chapter, you learned how to

    • use evidence to support claims
    • decide when you need a citation for evidence
    • work carefully from sources to join a "conversation" with published writers
    • introduce evidence with reporting words and context
    • avoid plagiarism
    • format a paper in MLA style

    Questions for reflection

    • How does integrating evidence relate to "sampling" in music?
    • How do we use evidence from other sources in everyday life?
    • How does the U.S. academic style of using and citing evidence differ from other language cultures?
    • Look back at 4.2: Sample Student Research Essay - Heritage Languages and the other sample essays in this book. How well did the writers use, integrate, and cite their evidence from other sources? Can you find examples of especially effective use of evidence you might use as a model? Can you find examples of less effective use of evidence?
