    Learning Objectives

In this section, you will be able to:

    • Introduce yourself in Arabic, and ask the other person's name.

    Introduction

Acquaintance and dialogue between members of the Arab community is one of the most important means of communication among them. Arabs like to meet new people and have conversations with them whenever they get the chance to meet them, whether at work, college, street, home, etc. The dialogue usually begins with a greeting, the most common and formal greeting is "Asalaamu Alaikum" ("peace be with you"), the response is "wa alaikum salaam" ("and peace be unto you"). A handshake usually comes with a greeting, eye contact, and a smile, after which the two exchange information to get to know each other.

Introducing yourself in Arabic involves a few basic phrases for greeting, stating your name, and asking the other person's name. Here's a simple structure for a beginner:

    Greetings and Introductions

    1. Greeting:
      • السلام عليكم (As-salamu alaykum) - Peace be upon you.
      • Response: وعليكم السلام (Wa alaykum as-salam) - And peace be upon you.
    2. Introducing Yourself:
      • اِسمي (Ismi) - My name
      • أنا (name) (Ana [your name]) - I am [your name].
        • Example: أنا محمد (Ana Muhammad) - I am Muhammad.
    3. Asking Someone's Name:
      • ما اسمكَ؟ (Ma ismuka?) - What is your name? (to a male)
      • ما اسمكِ؟ (Ma ismuki?) - What is your name? (to a female)
    4. Saying Good bye:
    • مع السلامة (Ma'a alsalama) - Good Bye

    Full Conversation Example

    1. Person A:
      • السلام عليكم (As-salamu alaykum)
    2. Person B:

    2. How are you?:
      • كيف حالك؟ (Kayfa haluka?) - How are you? (to a male)
      • كيف حالكِ؟ (Kayfa haluki?) - How are you? (to a female)
