Though perhaps best known for his flag-draped depictions of Fifth Avenue during WWI, Childe Hassam was an industrious artist who produced numerous scenes of both city and countryside. His work Snowstorm, Madison Square is a masterpiece because it shows Hassam’s skillful incorporation of French Impressionist techniques into a fully American urban scene, while foreshadowing the social progress to come.
