Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic) by Thomas Eakins is an oil-on-canvas portrait on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The painting portrays Dr. Samuel D. Gross, one of the most famous surgeons in the world at the time, leading a clinic for medical students while operating on a patient. Eakins completed the painting in 1875 for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, but was rejected by the Fine Arts Gallery jury, evidently because it was considered too frightening.
