The County Election by Missouri’s best-known artist, George Caleb Bingham, is one of a series of three paintings donated by Bank of America that are all valuable records of American history. Today, 170 years after the painting was created, we as a nation continue to grapple with the questions it raises about the fundamental tenets of democracy and the artist’s fervent belief that the people, with all their failings, should be the ones to decide critical issues.
