An opportunity to reclaim his position as a leading figure of modern art—and to do it publicly and on a grand scale—the commission of The Dance was a creative milestone in Henri Matisse’s career. This graceful and harmonious mural was created at the request of the Barnes Foundation’s founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, who asked the artist to fill the lunettes of the main gallery, giving him free rein to choose the subject matter.
