The Many Challenges English Presents to Native and Non-Native Speakers
In this lesson, we focused on the challenges that we all face in becoming persuasive, confident, and adept writers. English is rich amalgam of elements derived from a multitude of languages and other influences. Today, it is a truly global language that reflects a wide range of cultures. With its complex interaction of various grammars, its inconsistent rules, and its vast vocabulary of almost 200,000 words, English is difficult to master, humbling both its native born and non-native students. However, this complexity has enabled the evolution of a uniquely rich, adaptable, and nuanced language.
Your assignment is to discuss your own experience in striving to become a persuasive, confident, and adept writer. In a short essay of about 300 words, please review your own struggles to overcomes its challenges and your personal views on its strengths. If you are bilingual, please consider how knowing more than one language has been a benefit or not. Here are a few questions to get you started. We do not expect you to answer any or all of these questions. They are intended to jumpstart your thought process.
