     Writing Out Your Research Question

     

    SLOs-Support students in developing research questions, finding and evaluating sources, and integrating appropriate sources into their writing. -Engage in a recursive process of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading  -Conduct inquiry-based research by formulating research questions, identifying a variety of sources (e.g., utilizing internet and library resources, such as scholarly sources), and evaluating and integrating sources into writing, including using sources as evidence in researched arguments. 

    Using the chart in the Classroom Lecture 14.1, write out possible research questions using your own topic. Next, spend some time combing and refocusing the question. Submit for evaluation. This assignment can be done as formative or summative assessment.

    Question is within the scope of the project (may be have a larger scope than necessary, specific enough to address one main issue and group of people but may still be broad), is written as a question, does not contain leading phrases or logical fallacies.

     

    Adequate

     

    Question is not quite within the scope of the project and is either too narrow or too broad, is not quite specific enough to address one main issue and group of people, is written as a question, may contain a leading phrase but has no logical fallacies.

     

    Needs revision

    Question is not within the scope of the project, and/or is not specific enough to address one main issue and group of people, and/or is not written as a question, and/or contains leading phrases or logical fallacies.

     

    Note: The more effective the research question, the more effective the thesis will be. Students should not skip this step even if it happens early in the research process.
