In this lesson, you will learn how to examine authority by looking up experts and understanding the role they play in leading conversations and debates. We often talk about finding sources for your arguments and other essays. This is an important step when conducting college level writing. However, we often don’t have enough conversation about the authors of these sources. Yes, we might briefly look up the author to see if they have a degree, but most of the time, we are focusing on the information in the article or text we are reading or watching. Getting to know more about the author or specific authors can help you better understand the voices behind many of the arguments we engage in and the information we use. It is important to understand that learning more about how experts' ideas and beliefs that make a culture are behind the arguments and issues you will write about later in your research essay. You will also see that at times, experts have different approaches or even disagree with each other. Being able to analyze these views is integral. Closely evaluating the author will also add to the ethos of your work. You can keep track of information about the authors in your research notebook. Writing a profile a essay about an expert in the field of your research question is one another way to do this.
