    Module II: Tastes

    模块二:南北风味

Scenario 2.1: Li Ming askes Zhang Wenshan for recommendations of a restaurant.

    ZhW:

    LM:

    哥们儿,明天晚上我请齐音吃饭,你也去吧?

    好啊,去哪儿吃?

    我正在想呢。你有什么建议?

    川菜怎么样?又麻又辣,

    我最喜欢了。

    很多女生都怕辣, 最好是清淡一点儿的。寿司怎么样?

    行。对了,马小青去不去?

    我不知道,你去问她吧。

    哥们儿

    gēmen’er

    bros

    正在…

    zhèngzài…

    continuous action)

    by the way

    she, her

    Note:

正在…呢 is a combination of the adverb正在 and the particle 呢. This pattern is attached to a verb to indicate continuous action. The pattern is:

    Subject + 正在 + Verb + 呢

    我 正在 想 呢。

    (lit. “I am thinking.”)

又…又… is an adverb pattern that means “both…and….” Note that又 is followed only by adjectives or verbs, rather than nouns or pronouns. The pattern indicates that the two states or actions exist at the same time. The pattern is:

    Subject + 又 +Adj.1 + 又 + Adj. 2

    苹果 又 大 又 甜。

(lit. “The apples are both big and sweet.”)

一点儿 Note that 一点儿 usually follows an adjective in a comparative degree pattern. 寿司清淡一点儿 implies “Sushi is lighter (compared to others).”

Scenario 2.2: Zhang Wenshan and An Dawei talk about American food.

    ZhW:

    AD:

    ZhW:

    AD:

    大为,美国有什么好吃的?

    这个问题太难回答了。 我自己很喜欢披萨和热狗。

    我不知道,我得查查。

    热狗

    règǒu

    hot dog

    为什么

    wèishéme

    why

    it

    chá

    to look up

    Note:

为什么 is a question word that means “why” and functions as an adverb. 为什么 can occur before the subject, or after the subject and before the verb. The pattern is:

    Subject + 为什么 + Verb + Object

    你 为什么 去 中国?

    or

    为什么 + Subject + Verb + Object

    为什么 你 去 中国?

(lit. “Why do you go to China”?)

查查is a reduplicated verb phrase to soften the tone.
