    Module I: Invitations

    模块一:邀请

Scenario 1.1: Li Ming calls Qi Yin to invite her for a dinner.

    LM:

    喂,齐音在吗?

    我就是,您是哪位?

    我是李明,我们昨天在学校的舞会上见过。

    哦,是你啊。 有事吗?

    明天晚上有空吗?我想请你吃饭?

    好啊,我让马小青跟我一起去,可以吗?

    当然可以,我叫张文山也一起去吧。

    to ask

    Note:

在舞会上 means “at the dance party.”

过 a particle, indicates “having the experience.” 过 literally means “go through, pass.” Adding the particle 过 to the verb emphasizes the experience that the subject went through in the past and usually implies that he/she gained relevant knowledge from the experience. The pattern is:

    Subject + Verb +过 + Object

    我 见 过 你。

    (lit. “I’ve seen you.”)

This pattern implies I have some sort of familiarity with you.

请 in the phrase请你吃饭, means “invite (you for a meal).”

让means “to let someone do something.”

一起 is often combined with 跟/和 to form a prepositional phrase for expressing that someone undertakes some action “together with” someone else. The pattern is:

    Subject + Preposition + Noun/Pronoun + Adverb + Verb

    她 跟 我 一起 去。

(lit. “She with me together go.”)

叫 means “to ask someone to do something.”

Scenario 1.2: Qi Yin asks Ma Xiaoqing to have dinner with her and Li Ming.

    Note:

可 an adverb, is used to intensify the fact. For example,

    我可不想去。 vs 我不想去。

I certainly don’t want to go. I don’t want to go.

    他可喜欢孩子了。 他喜欢孩子。

He indeed likes children. He likes children.

当电灯泡 is Chinese slang, which equals “the third wheel.” The sentence 我可不想当你们的电灯泡can be translated as “I don’t want to be a third wheel.”

那我更不去了means “(If…, ) then I’m DEFINITELY not going.”
