    Warm Ups

    These warm ups can be used for personal practice or in-class activities.

    Activity 1: Singing and Conducting

    Time signature two four, each measure is four 8th notes working up the major scale from do-do

    Use this notation to complete the following:

    • Conduct in a pattern of two as you sing the solfège
    • Use the Curwen hand signs as you sing
    • Perform this in a variety of keys

    Activity 2: Rhythm and Movement

    In small groups (3-4 people), take turns conducting and being the "ensemble" for this simple rhythm. Clap the rhythm to perform.

    Listening

    Work on the conducting patterns as you listen for strong and weak beats and conduct with the music.

    Sight Singing

    Melody 1

    Five measures, time signature three four, one sharp in key signature

    Melody 3

    Eighth measures in four four. Key signature has two sharps

    Rhythm

    Rhythm 1

    Rhythm only, no pitches, two four time signature

    Rhythm 3

    Rhythm only, no pitches, common time signature

    Composing Your Own Rhythm

    Using the staff provided, compose a four to eight measure rhythm. Use sixteenth notes, eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, or their coinciding rests. In a small group, take turns conducting as the other group members perform each rhythm. Use both Takadimi and counting methods.

    Where were you most successful as an ensemble? Come up with one positive comment and one idea for improvement with each rhythm. Which method of counting worked best for you? Why?
