    Sentence Formation with Present and Future Modal Exercises

    Exercise 1

    In the following series of activities, make sentences with the modal verbs at the top of each exercise

    A: Can or cannot

    1. I --------------- eat 10 hamburgers.

    2. My mother --------------- cook better than I can.

    3. Women -------------- usually clean the house better than men can.

    4. I --------------- learn English.

    5. With an education, people -------------- earn more money than without an education.

    6. Most people in this classroom -------------- speak Chinese.

    B: Should or Should Not

    C: Can or Could

    D: Must and Either Have To or Has To (First with “must,” then ‘have to” or “has to.”)

    E: Had Better in the Negative (Put NOT after "had better" to make the negative. They are either the present tense or the future tense; THEY ARE NOT THE PAST TENSE.)

    Change these sentences to the negative, please. Write out the complete sentence. Don’t just write in the word not.

    1. You had better continue taking that medicine.

    2. You had better come to the picnic.

    3. You had better drink coffee before you go to work.

    4. We had better take the freeway to get to the college.

    5. Sherry had better call her ex-boyfriend.

    F: Shouldn't, Don't Have to or Must not

    1. Airline passengers _______________ carry a paper boarding pass. They can save their boarding pass in their cell phone.

    2. Airline passengers ___________________ put their prescription medicines in their checked baggage. If the bags get lost, they will not have their medicine.

    3. Airline passengers _________________ check their carry-on bags. They can store them in the overhead bins.

    4. Airline passengers ___________________ smoke in the airplane.

    5. Parents __________________ leave young children alone at home.

    6. The students _________________ come to campus on Sunday.

    7. Children _________________ disobey their parents.

    8. Students ____________________ wait until the night before a test to study.

    9. You __________________ wear a suit or dress to attend classes.

    10. Shoppers ____________________ go to a store to buy everything. Most things are available to buy online.

    Exercise 2: Answering Questions

    Answer the following questions about yourself.
