They Say--I Am - by Kaylee McClure

“I’m so OCD”
They say while color coding their notes
With perfectly aligned picture frames
And full of “funny” perfectionist quotes
“I’m so OCD”
They say while scrubbing their hands raw
For the tenth time in a row all because they touched their phone
And no matter just how clean it was the germs may leave them dead
“I’m so OCD”
They say, one honest as they spoke
The rest, unknowing of that plight, only took that lightly
For them, it’s just a common saying or something of a joke
“I have crippling depression.”
They say, quoting a comedic video from Vine
The phrase became a “meme”
A joke with merchandise online
“I have crippling depression”
Some say with dull and tired eyes
Exhausted from just waking up
Missing out on their lives
“I have crippling depression”
Some say, wearing “okay” as a mask
Going about their days, though numb,
Enjoyment but a task
For many, it is easier to make light of their unknown
We follow cues from those around afraid to act alone.
Ignorance, no matter the intent, is where prejudice is grown.
Everybody’s mental health, at times, has highs and lows
We all have spells of anxiety, depression, and mental foes.
Intrusive thoughts, insecurities, and fears that make their blows
A mental illness weighs down like a wet coat made of lead
A constant feeling, thought, compulsion, or fear that looms from wake through bed.
It stings to hear it joked about while stuck inside your head
Disorders used as insults or jokes should not be a lingual habit.
The thought that simply being “neat” means OCD has no merit.
Learn that these are not a joke. Don’t make us grin and bear it.
