    Here, you will find the prompt to Essay 4: Poetry Analysis.

    Purpose: In Essay #3, we practiced our close reading and argument skills by analyzing the relationship between words and meaning in the soliloquy of Hamlet. Essay #4 will further hone our critical analysis skills and close reading skills by considering how image, meaning, word, choice and diction add to a poem’s meaning.

    Required Texts: Your essay must analyze one poem we have read in class.

    What this means? In your essay, you should explore the theme of the the poem? What’re the literary devices/poetic devices that you see in the poem? How/why do these literary devices/poetic devices contribute to the poem's overall theme?

    Sample Thesis: Topic +Opinion +Reasons Why

    (Robert Frost's "The Road Less Traveled" expresses the theme of indecision through his use of rhyme, imagery, metaphor )

    Writing Task: After carefully reading the required texts and assigned poems, write a 4- 6 page thesis-driven essay that thoughtfully responds to the following prompt:

    Analyze one poem’s literary elements (parts of the poem and figures of speech) and use this analysis to interpret the meaning of this poem.

    In other words, what is the poem saying and what literary elements does the author use to demonstrate this message?
