In this part of the reading, we are going to look at some other important considerations to help you build on your evaluation skills and make even better choices about what resources to use! And remember, this isn't just for school. It's important to evaluate your resources when you share them on social media or use them for your own personal needs like exploring career options, seeking medical advice, or figuring out which donut shop in Oregon is the best.

    Evaluation recap...or re-CRAP!

During Week 4 you learned about using The CRAP Test to evaluate articles, books, and other resources for their credibility. As a quick reminder, CRAP stands for Currency, Reliability, Authority, Purpose / Point of View, and The CRAP Test gives you a series of questions to consider when determining if your resource is credible. If you need a refresher, please review that chapter (chapter 4).

    Give me another R!

Credibility isn't the only thing we need to consider when picking a resource. Another important aspect is Relevance. Relevance relates to how well the resource addresses your research topic or how useful it is in answering your questions. Here are some questions to consider when thinking about relevance:

    • Is the resource about your topic? Or does it only mention your topic superficially?
    • Does the information help you answer questions you have about your topic?
    • Does it provide information you need to accurately communicate about your topic to someone else?
    • Does the resource spur you to think about your topic in new ways?
