Research the circumstances around the censorship of the book, and respond to the following prompts. Use complete sentences, correct grammar, and proper spelling and punctuation. Each of your responses should be at least 2 sentences in length.
- Give a brief summary of the book, including what type of book it is (fiction/non-fiction; young adult content; etc.). You don’t have to read the book yourself, unless you want to!
- Explain why the book was challenged. Did bias against a certain group of people play a part in the challenge, either in relation to the book itself, or to the book owner (library, school, etc.)? How did the challengers explain their authority?
- Investigate the circumstances of challenges to the book. Who initiated the challenges and why? How did they go about challenging the book (did they circulate a petition? Go to library/school administration? Something else?)
- Describe responses to the challenge by libraries, schools, or other owners of the book.
- What is your opinion on the challenges and responses? Do you agree or disagree one way or the other?
- Could the situation have been handled differently? How?
- Don’t forget to cite your sources!
