Students should prepare for the debate by gathering, reading, understanding and referencing sources to support their side of the issue. Have them use a database such as Opposing Viewpoints in Context for their in-class research, to find easily digestible information.
Hold an in-class debate assigning pro and con research to the class, dividing them into teams.
Referencing a banned or challenged book (have one for each small group), answer the questions:
- Are there valid reasons to ban books?
- Does bias against a certain group of people come into play when books are banned? How can you tell?
- Do the reasons listed for your book seem valid to you? Why or why not?
- What benefits, if any, are there to getting a book banned?
- What harm, if any, is caused by having a book banned?
- Is age-appropriateness a valid reason?
