This module will cover African Americans fight for freedom and the resulting Reconstruction era and beyond. At the close of the Civil War, three cornerstone amendments were put into place for the newly freed Africans. They were the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. The 13th Amendment (1865) abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. Today, we have come to know that everyone who was enslaved was not freed at the close of the Civil War on April 9, 1865. In Galveston Texas, enslaved Africans were not notified of their freedom until June 19, 1865. The 14th Amendment (1868) grants citizenship, due process, and equal protection under the law. The 15th Amendment (1870) grants the right to vote to Black men. Women would gain the right to vote in (1920) with the 19th Amendment. During this time we saw the establishment of Black businesses and Black towns, and racial violence directed at Black progress. We saw the rise of Black votership and the election of the first Black members of the US Congress.

- Discuss the participation of African Americans in the Union war efforts.
- Discuss the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 19th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
Upon Completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Identify and demonstrate an understanding of key concepts in Africana Studies, and interrelated disciplines.
- Recognize and discuss social issues affecting people of African descent in the United States, across the African Diaspora, and throughout the world, with knowledge of Africa as a place of origin.
- Analyze issues related to race, class, gender, and sexuality that affect people of African descent socially, politically, and economically on local, national and global levels. Employ life-long learning beyond the classroom to create trans-generational, community-based solutions to the problems studied in this course, with future impacts for marginalized minority groups, especially African Americans.
