When do we use it?
The construction "hace + period of time + que" is use when describing how long an event or an action has taken place in relation to the present time or the past.
In relation to the present
To indicate how long an action or event has been happening.
Fórmula: Hace + period of time + que + present tense
Hace 5 años que vivo en San José.
I have been living in San José for 5 years.
In relation to the past
Fórmula: Hace + period of time + que + preterit tense
Hace 5 años que me mudé a San José.
I moved to San José 5 years ago.
