Environmental Issues with Water
To familiarize yourself with the varied environmental issues with water, please view the following video exemplifying a particular issue, taking notes on your immediate impressions and what questions you have.
The United Nations’ Climate Action site, “Water – at the Center of the Climate Crisis,” culls information from various international studies on environmental water issues and notes, among other statistics, that “about two billion people worldwide don’t have access to safe drinking water.” Additionally, the site addresses that “Only 0.5 per cent of water on Earth is useable and available freshwater – and climate change is dangerously affecting that supply," which along with population growth, "will put pressure on food supply as most of the freshwater used, about 70 per cent on average, is used for agriculture (it takes between 2000 and 5000 liters of water to produce a person’s daily food)" (United Nations' Climate Action). The site also reminds readers that “Water and climate change are inextricably linked” and that “climate change affects the world’s water in complex ways” (United Nations' Climate Action). Data from another UN environmental source, UN Water and Climate Change, cites the following primary water-related environmental issues:
- Flooding and rising sea levels can contaminate land and water resources with saltwater or faecal matter, and cause damage to water and sanitation infrastructure, such as waterpoints, wells, toilets and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Glaciers, ice caps and snow fields are rapidly disappearing. Meltwater feeds many of the great river systems. Volatility in the cryosphere can affect the regulation of freshwater resources for vast numbers of people in lowland areas.
- Droughts and wildfires are destabilizing communities and triggering civil unrest and migration in many areas. Destruction of vegetation and tree cover exacerbates soil erosion and reduces groundwater recharge, increasing water scarcity and food insecurity.
- Growing demand for water increases the need for energy-intensive water pumping, transportation, and treatment, and has contributed to the degradation of critical water-dependent carbon sinks such as peatlands. Water-intensive agriculture for food production, particularly meat, and for growing crops used as biofuels, can further exacerbate water scarcity (UN Water and Climate Change).
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has reports devoted to “The Future of Water,” warning, “Countries that are unable to address water-related challenges” face “greater risk of disease, growing inequality, poor economic growth, and a heightened risk of internal political instability" (1). The Office of the Director of National Intelligence further asserts, “[s]hared water resources among states are increasingly likely to become flashpoints as water security diminishes and geopolitical competition grows” (1). Vital to human, plant, and animal life, water access is an often overlooked environmental justice issue that many of us can find iterations of in our backyards, cities, and regions.
