The personal a is a preposition that is used before a direct object in Spanish when the direct object is a person, a specific group of people, or a loved pet. There is no translation for the personal a in English. A direct object answers the questions who? or what? in a sentence.
The personal a is placed before the direct object. The personal a helps indicate who received the action of the verb. In the sentence Llamo a Ana María. the personal a helps us realize that Ana María is the object who receives the action of the verb.
We do not use a personal a if the direct object is not a person or pet. In the sentence Leo el libro. there is no personal a because a book is not a person or animal.
The personal a is not used after the verb haber, wild animals, non-specific people. The following sentences do not have a personal a because the direct object is not a person, a specific group of people, or a loved pet.
Hay muchos estudiantes en la clase de español.
Veo los tigres.
Busco un médico.
he prepositional phrase (or preposition) is placed before the direct object when the object is a person, a specific group of people, or a beloved pet. It has no direct translation in English and is required to indicate who receives the action, as in "I see Maria ." It is used with verbs such as to know, to call, to look for, and to visit .
