    Tener

    The verb tener means to have. It does NOT conjugate the same way regular verbs do. This means that it is irregular and its conjugated forms must be memorized.

    The present tense conjugations are:

    tener

    tengo tenemos

    tienes tenéis

    tiene tienen

    TENER + QUE + INFINITIVE can be used to express what someone has to do. For example

    Tengo que comer. Tenemos que escribir. I have to eat. We have to write.

    Tienes que estudiar. Tenéis que correr. You have to study. You (all) have to run.

    Tiene que cantar. Tienen que vivir. He/she has to sing. They have to You have to sing. You (all) have to live.

    The expression TENER GANAS DE + INFINITIVE is used to express when someone feels like doing something. For example

    Tengo ganas de correr. Tenemos ganas de cantar. I feel like running. We feel like singing.

    Tienes ganas de bailar. Tenéis ganas de escribir. You feel like dancing. You (all) feel like writing.

    Tiene ganas de comer. Tienen ganas de dormir. He/She feels like eating. They feel like sleeping. You feel like eating. You(all) feel like sleeping.

    Tener is also used in a variety of expressions. Note that a noun follows the verb tener in these expressions. Here are some of the most common expressions.

    tener…..años to be ……years old

    tener (mucho) calor to be (very) hot

    tener (mucho) cuidado to be (very) careful

    tener (mucho) frío to be (very) cold

    tener (mucha) hambre to be (very) hungry

    tener (mucho) miedo to be (very) scared

    tener (mucha) prisa to be in a (big) hurry

    tener razón to be right

    no tener razón to be wrong

    tener (mucha) sed to be (very) thirsty

    tener (mucho) sueño to be (very) sleepy

    tener (mucha) suerte to be (very) lucky
